My sincere condolences. I was meaning to look up my Doctor that saved my life when I almost died at 14 years old. At Memorial Hospital, his father and him operated on me. I was a patient, hit by a car on Newport Ave., a young driver speeding drunk, and I just about lost my life and all the blood in my body, I think pronounced dead at a part in the surgery because I could see myself and the surgery and told Richard about it. My short life was in their hands, and only their hands!
He came to see me every day in the hospital and almost had to take off my right leg but I told him God told me to tell him I would heal. I think he almost took off my leg, bad shape, but I think he had a God intuition... true story. He was very concerned. His Dad and him did an excellent job on me. I am 66, successful, 4 years in the Navy, and still have a great life because he and his Dad saved my life and kept both legs intact!
He is an amazing Doctor and I am very sorry I didn't try to look him up earlier. That's what I was doing now, looking him up to call him or come see him to thank him. Even the right lower bone, off centered a little bit healed well enough I played competitive tennis in the Navy. Without the determination of Richard, I would have not survived or at best lost a leg, which would have been disastrous for my life. Again, my wife and I are together because of him, else the direction of my life would have been very different! He came to see me almost every day in the hospital, cared about me, my math ability even, and the God I actually saw in bright white. Of course you never can talk about this stuff, but it is true. There is white, form, clear vision, and unbelievable peace in the next life! I did see the surgery I watched as he and his Dad did surgery on me. Yes, Dr. Bertini is with God and is in a better place, I can guarantee it.
He affected lives like me, his patient, not in a small way! Dr. Bertini cared about his patients. I am sorry that it took me so long to find out that the Doctor has passed. Again, my condolences (and that of my wife that never got to meet him even once). So sad!!!

My thoughts are with you. Lois, I cannot tell you how much you and Dick meant to my parents; it's a friendship they treasured. Today I just started perusing through "Memories With a Sprinkling of Opinion" which for unknown reasons I saved from my mother's house and was touched to see the entry about my Dad. I just learned of your loss and lack the words to express what I want to convey. I can only say that remembering stories about you that I heard third-hand through my parents (like when you sold your RI home and were staying in the office temporarily) often brings a smile. My sympathies and thoughts are with you. You and Dick made a difference in my parents world and no doubt countless other lives.
