George Shabo Obituary

Shabo, George, 90, of 125 Glen Meadows Drive, Pawtucket, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home on Wednesday, June 30th.  George was the beloved husband of the Dorothy (Gagnon) Shabo as they were married for 65 wonderful years.  Born in Pawtucket, George was the son of the late Shaya and Mary (Agaty) Shabo.

George graduated from Pawtucket East High School in 1949.  A few years later, he was drafted into the United States Army where he earned the rank of Corporal.  George was very proud to have served his country later becoming an Army Medic during the Korean War, stationed in Germany.  When he returned from his tour of duty, George attended and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Bryant University.  

George was a dedicated employee of the H.M. Soule Construction Company of Pawtucket, as an Accountant/Treasurer for 20 years.  Later, George was employed as an accountant for the Shoor-Elias Glass Company Company, also of Pawtucket, prior to his retirement.  For the past 20 years George was proud and honored to be appointed to and serve on the City of Pawtucket Zoning Board of Appeals.  

George was an avid community volunteer for youth activities in the city of Pawtucket including sponsorship of the Pawtucket Boys Club, coach and President/Treasurer of the Pawtucket Crusaders Pop Warner football organization, baseball coach for the Manning-Heffern Darlington American Little League Baseball Team, and he also served as a youth baseball umpire for several years.  George volunteered for the local Pawtucket Schools and enjoyed chaperoning on St. Theresa's Block  Island 8th Grade field trips.  He was also a long time active member of the Pawtucket D.I.P. Club and a Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dusza-Almeida Post 2339.

George was loved by many in the Pawtucket community and had several suitable nicknames bestowed upon him such as Rocky, Louie, The Man, Vince, Pops, and others.  

Besides his wife, George is survived by his children:  Susan Chalmers and her husband Paul of Pawtucket, George and his wife Mary of Old Orchard Beach, ME, Sharon Franco and her husband Anthony of Foster, RI, and Jeffrey Shabo and his wife Nair of Pawtucket. Grandchildren: Paul, Angelo, George Robert, Elizabeth, Anthony, Melissa, Catherine, Jeffrey, Jared, Christopher, and Brian. Great-grandchildren: Jack, Owen, Finn, Phoenix, Julia, Ella, Josephina, and soon to arrive, Anthony.  He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.  He was predeceased by his seven sisters: Lilly, Sophie, Nora, Olga, Rose, Victoria and Dorothy.

George Shabo's funeral service will be held at the MANNING-HEFFERN Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket on Thursday, July 8th at 10:00 AM to which friends and relatives are invited.  Burial with full military honors will follow at the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI.  Calling hours are Wednesday, July 7th from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name to Hope Health Hospice, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, 02904 or Disabled American Veterans, 1 Capitol Hill, Providence, RI 02908.
